Firsts

* Kate scored 3 goals in her soccer game today!! There are an odd number of teams on Kate's soccer league so this week was our bye week. Instead of not playing, they have the teams come and play the parents on the team. So it was Dads vs the Phillys. The Dads were good at not making a big pack and spreading out a little more. They also helped the less aggressive kids get some kicks in. As soon as they started I saw Kate run up to the ball and give it a little kick and I was so proud! Before long she had kicked it a couple more times and then, with lots of encouragement, she kicked it in the net! Before the day was done she had scored 3 and was really proud or herself. Who knows what will happen next week when we're back playing 4 and 5 year olds. And of course this was the game I didn't bring my camera!

* Sawyer has had no interest in potty training. When I ask him if he wants to sit on the potty he almost always tells me no. I keep bringing it up and telling him that Woody and Buzz go pee pee on the potty but it didn't help, he still had no interest. Tonight after his bath he decided he wanted to sit on the potty. The few times he has done this before he sat there for a little bit and no luck and he was done. Tonight he was sitting and I was helping Kate get ready for bed and he said, "uh oh, pee pee!" and I went and checked and sure enough....he had peed all over the floor. I am so not ready to potty train a boy! Think I can make it Ryan's job?

Baby's....I mean Big Girl's....First Haircut

We are a little behind those 3 year olds a little less hair challenged, but I finally decided it was time Kate got a haircut. Mainly I was seeing the top layer of her hair wasn't curling as well as the bottom and I thought it was time it got a trim.

Here is a before shot :
(we were on our way home from seeing Monsters vs Aliens in 3D. She's holding onto the glasses....which she never wore....and the movie seemed to bore her. She really doesn't like TV and movies very much yet)
She was so excited about getting her haircut that halfway through the movie she asked if she was getting her hair cut today. I hadn't really planned on it being TODAY...but since she was excited I decided why not. Then we walked into the place and she said, "I don't want to get my hair cut today." So I didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised that she acted similar to the Dr's visit where he took 3 vials of blood. Calm, happy and staring straight ahead. Here are some during shots:

Her hairstylist kind of looked like the puppet guy on Heroes....anyone with me on that one? Maybe thats how he got her to hold still....
And the after shot:
Its actually gotten curlier with it drying and it looks really cute. Can't wait to see if I can still do the pigtails and braids I've been excited to finally do!

she made yellow!

I was getting so scared about this potty training thing. I was thinking I messed up by kinda introducing it in tucson and then putting it away for a while until we got here. and just on a whim we were talking about the potty today and I put her in panties. well, we sat in the kitchen (with the tile and the potty) all morning long. we were playing cars on the cold hard floor, cooking with pretend dishes in the kitchen and reading a lot of books. that was okay because my only goal for the day was to take pictures of my house and blog them (sorry, that got pushed back again!) I had told her that when she went potty I would give her some m's and I set them on the counter for incentive. I caught her a couple times trying to climb up and get them and she threw a couple small "I want m's" fits. by lunchtime I had nearly given up and she still hadn't peed anywhere!! after lunch I was sitting at the kitchen table feeding sawyer and I asked if she needed to go pee pee and said to sit on the potty. after a minute she said "I made yellow" (thats what we call pee pee....long story) and I said "really?" and she has no idea what that means but she said "really" and I was skeptical but I picked up sawyer and the boppy and we went over to look and there was nothing. so she went and played some more and I sat back at the table and wasn't really paying attention to her. then all of a sudden, out of the corner of my eye, I saw her run and sit on the potty and then she said "I made yellow." could it be true?!? I walked over and sure enough, she had made yellow!! for her first time ever! I was so excited that I'm pretty sure she thought I was a crazy person. I was hugging her and about to cry and doing a little dance and calling my mom! and she got her m's. so then she was excited and doing a little cute bum dance! I know she isn't potty trained yet, but this is a step in the right direction and I'm SO excited!!!

as promised, here is an "after rash" picture of sawyer.

kate's first major owwie

today I was sitting on the couch watching ryan and kate out the window having fun swimming wishing that I was out there too instead of waiting for my visiting teaching companion to pick me up. (don't get me wrong, I like visiting teaching, but I LOVE swimming with my husband and my kate!!) I turned away from one second and then I hear kate crying. not unusual...she's teething and has been throwing some back arched tantrums quite frequently these days. but I look out and she has blood all over her lips. I ran outside and asked ryan what had happened (he was so calm, I knew it wasn't serious so I wasn't panicked) and he said she was standing on the top step (like she likes to do all the time) and she was walking and she slipped and bit her lip!!

she only cried for a minute and then I got her some ice and she had fun sucking on it and totally forgot about anything else. randomly she started copying ryan and sticking her lip out like this (even before she had bitten it). but it looks like she's showing it off!!

now, I sure hope she doesn't have a big fat lip in all of our washington/oregon pictures!!

baby steps

kate has started to get brave and take a few steps! she has been cruising like crazy for a long while now and she has been able to balance on her own for a little while and now daddy has been practicing with her and she is taking little baby steps! its usually about 3 or 4 steps before she falls into daddy's lap, but it is looking even more balanced than it was 2 days ago! we think she might be walking on her own before jen goes back home!

another first with kate

last night was the first time ryan and I were up with kate while she was throwing up. she hasn't thrown up ever in her short life (just baby spit up and thats not quite as bad.) it was so miserable. everytime she threw up I wanted to cry. since I've only done it myself a few times in my life, I haven't been around it much. it sounded awful, she was so sad....and it was really really gross. she did it everywhere when we were least expecting it...in the kitchen, in our bedroom, in her bedroom, in her bed, in my arms and all down the front of me. ryan was good to clean it up while I would try and comfort her. he went to sleep with her in her rocking chair and once she was asleep she had a good night. she woke up this morning happy and hungry.
now I have a lot of laundry to do.

what the crawl?!?

so after 10 long months of being stationary, kate has finally learned to crawl! (Ryan and I are now learning why everyone says it was a nice thing that she was immobile for so long!) she is getting into everything!! but it is no ordinary crawl! we think she feels unstable when she has both feet behind her with both knees on the ground so she has improvised her own...unique...way of crawling!

she crawls with her right knee to the ground and her left leg coming out like a spider. we've given up on teaching her the "real" way and she's getting really fast. she's definately stubborn like her mommy!! she'll do it HER way!
